FOUND: Objects of Meaning
There are things we notice - a seed or an acorn on the ground. The delicate wing of an insect found beside a pond. A small, ordinary fragment of the natural world that for some reason stays with us. Perhaps it reminds us of a place, or a particular summer. There is a particular pleasure in wearing something whose significance is not immediately obvious.
The things we notice become the things we remember.
Jewellery inspired by what we find
Some of the most personal jewellery begins with something very small. Many of my designs begin with objects found in nature and the stories, memories and symbolism that become attached to them.
A dragonfly wing, a sycamore seed, and a little acorn each carry its own quiet language.
The Dragonfly Wing began with the discovery of a beautifully preserved dragonfly by the pond my sisters and I built on the family farm in the west of Ireland. Its intricate structure and delicate form became the starting point for a piece of fine jewellery inspired by transformation, curiosity and the fleeting beauty of the natural world.
The Sycamore Seed takes its inspiration from something familiar to anyone who has watched these little winged seeds spin slowly to the ground this time of year. This one fell from a giant and ancient tree on the family farm that has kept watch over many generations of the Mears clan - for at least 300 years. I love this idea of something so consistent and enduring, tired to family and place.
My Little Acorn found on the grounds of my old university is in so many ways - full of possibility. It has long carried associations with growth, strength and what might become. It is an understated symbol, made personal by the meaning we choose to give it.
The quiet symbolism of nature
Jewellery inspired by nature is so enduring. A piece of jewellery can become a private reminder - something worn close to the skin and understood most deeply by the person wearing it. The original seed falls, the acorn is carried away, and the dragonfly's life is brief. Jewellery gives these small observations another life. Meaningful jewellery is something beautiful in its own right, but with another layer beneath the surface.
I make every piece in my studio in the west of Ireland, working with precious metals and traditional goldsmithing techniques alongside wax carving and contemporary methods. Pieces are carefully formed, refined and hand finished, with particular attention given to proportion, texture and detail.
The result is jewellery that feels considered rather than mass-produced: handmade Irish jewellery in precious metals, created slowly and intended to be kept.
A gift with a story
For the same reason, nature-inspired jewellery can make an especially personal gift. An acorn might speak of a new beginning. A dragonfly might represent transformation or a chapter of change. A tiny natural form might simply remind someone of a place you shared, or of a part of themselves that you hope they never lose. These make truly meaningful gifts.
